Food Discovery: Mati's Meat and Bread (Filinvest, Alabang)

If you like steak but you're in a tight budget, no need to fret as Mati's Meat and Bread offers the best value for Steaks at affordable prices.

Opened in October 2014, Mati's Meat and Bread is located at the new extension of Festival Mall which has a stunning view of River Park. The restaurant's walls are made of clear glass, giving it's diners a view of lush green landscaping.

Last September 9, I was one of the lucky bloggers who got an invite for a (lunch) food tasting at Mati's Meat and Bread. Let me share to you my experience for that afternoon and guide you through some of the dishes that you can try out at Mati's. This entry is going to be quite lengthy but it's going to be worth the read.

Creamy Spinach Dip (Php280)
I just can't get enough of that spinach dip. I almost finished the entire serving by myself.

Truffled Bone Marrow (Php385)
Reminds me of Bulalo, without the soup. The dip you scoop out from the bone marrow is surprisingly good.

Papa's Spicy Crispy Wing (Php200)
Not really a fan of chicken wings but after sampling this dish, I am now a fan. The chicken wings have a distinct kick in it. Sweet and spicy, moist and juicy all under that crunchy coating.

Balut Aligue - Php195
This dish (literally) is begging for rice to go with it. For me, you just can't eat this dish on it's own. The aligue compliments the balut perfectly. On a side note, and don't say I didn't warn you, this dish also has "putok-batok" all over it. Best for sharing.

Oyster Rockefeller - Php450
I was hesitant to try the oysters but after tasting one, I got hooked.

Salpicao Pizza (Php385) | Bia's Four Cheese - Php365
Tali's Gamberetti (Php350) | Jala Pestroli (not yet in the menu)

The thinnest and tastiest pizza I have tried. Don't let the crust fool you. As thin as it looks like, Mati's pizza are packed with flavor and as filling as it can get. While most of the pizza dishes I have tried are oily, the pizza at Mati's, from what I can tell, is the opposite.

Camille's Spinach and Arugula Bean Salad (Php195)
Vince's Chicken and Arugula Salad (Php225)

When you want to eat light, you have these options. The grilled chicken perfectly compliments the salad. The chicken adds that texture in the salad.

Crispy Pork Belly with Kimchi and Nori Cream Cheese Spread (Php335)
Chorizo with Potato Hash and Cream Cheese (Php275)

The menu would not be complete if we don't have tacos. We had a chance to sample these and just like the other dishes, we loved both!

Seafood Pasta (Php340)
Truffle Pasta (Php398)

Being a pasta lover, it was a delight to sample these dishes. You can never go wrong with either of the two pasta dishes.

USDA Salpicao Rice (Php425)
300g Certified Angus Ribeye (Php1,400)

This dish is begging for an extra rice. The beef is so soft and tasty.

With veggies and mashed potatoes, topped by gravy (not pictured), this is s sure winner!

What we liked with the steaks is that we were able to try and cook the meat ourselves, hence the term "cooked table side" which is a good way to involve customers and have a simple engagement.

Red Velvet Cake (Php250)
Choco Fudge (Php220)
Eclair Cake (Php250)

Whatever your choice, you can never go wrong. Mati's will satisfy your sweet tooth. After trying these three, the Eclair Cake became my favorite dessert.

My Thoughts

I like how the dishes were presented (most of the dishes were served on a wooden tray), reasonably priced (servings are for sharing) and everything that was presented to our group that afternoon was very delicious, you can take my word for it!

Mati's offers a wide range of dishes, from their Starters, Tacos, Salads, Pizza, Pasta, Sandwiches and of course, to their affordable steaks. There is always something for everybody. How their dishes were named is also something, the names of the dishes would (sometimes) be from a family member who have contributed or has something to be associated to the dish.

I also like the place, how the interior looks like and the fantastic view of the River Park. It felt like I have my own lake house and I am looking at the lake while I enjoy my lunch.

My view from the top of the stairs. The place is well-ventilated and it promotes a "feel at home" ambiance.

The view of the man-made lake from the inside.

The view of the man-made lake from the inside.

After the grueling food tasting session with the group, all I can say is that you have to try Mati's Meat and Bread. Bring your family for lunch or dinner, you can never go wrong with the available dishes. Treat yourself on a payday. Take your special someone on a dinner date. When you eat, you associate the memory or the event with the food. Mati's Meat and Bread will give you that and possibly more.

Note: Prices stated in this blog entry are accurate as of September 9, 2015

Your favorite street food might be the cause of your high cholesterol levels

Manila, Philippines; September 9, 2015  Filipinos' love affair with street foods is due in many ways to its interesting taste and, more importantly, its affordability. But snacking on your favorite street fare may have far reaching health issues than we care to admit.

The Philippines is known for its rich and wide range food staples. Many are available just around the corner. However, those who frequent sidewalk vendors for their street foods are at an increased risk of having high cholesterol levels — more particularly those who crave for chicken livers.

Chicken livers offer nutrients that are beneficial for anemic individuals: they are rich in protein, iron and vitamin B12, as well as folate which is important in promoting fertility and preventing birth defects.

Despite the essential nutrients present in chicken liver, Amado Nazal, medical director of Pharex HealthCorp., noted that consuming more servings of chicken liver than what is ideal could threaten a person’s health, putting them at risk of high cholesterol and developing cardiovascular diseases.

According to the American Heart Association, a healthy person needs only 300 milligrams of cholesterol every day while less than 200 milligrams are required for those who already have high cholesterol levels. However, chicken liver already contains 479 milligrams of cholesterol in a three-ounce serving—that’s about two to three skewered chicken livers — not including your other sources of cholesterol within the day.

"Despite how delicious skewered chicken livers are, more particularly those that are grilled on the streets, it may not be a healthy option for people who are already at risk of heart diseases," Nazal said. "Cholesterol should be ingested in limited amounts as it may cause life-threatening consequences in the long run, especially when left untreated."

Healthcare providers are starting to fret that Filipinos who have high cholesterol levels will continue to indulge on street foods that are actually bad for them. The World Health Organization added that most people with this condition are not getting the treatment they need to lower their risks of having cardiovascular disease such as heart attack and stroke.

With this, Pharex HealthCorp. — the most prescribed uni branded generics —highlights the importance of taking the prescribed medication and making lifestyle modifications to lower a person’s cholesterol levels.

Nazal said, "For patients who are at risk of having the disease, adhering to their medication is important in reducing their risks of developing heart problems. If they cannot avoid eating grilled chicken livers, then it is important for them to keep their cravings at a minimum and continue their therapy as intended."

Cholesterol-lowering medication is widely available for Filipinos. But Nazal exclaimed that if "patients will practice non-adherence to their therapy, the quality of their life will be greatly affected."

He concluded, "Satisfying your cravings for street foods is natural; it’s part of the Filipino culture. However, it’s more important for you to prioritize taking care of yourself to enjoy life's other flavors."

CDR-KING: Let There Be Solar Powered Light

Gone are the days when our typical Juan Dela Cruz’ plight for brightness depends on an oil fueled lamp. A lot of eyebrows were burnt from that rigorous process. Pain-staking old-school scenario equates to a person's patience to what's obvious: Scarcity of light, stalls our nation’s road to progress.

One can also imagine during night time back then wherein streets or even roads are in complete darkness and the only source of light comes from moon and stars. Sadly, up until now there are areas in the country which lacks the luxury of having a decent street light, in particular, our rural areas.

Lucky are those in the urban community as Local governments found it imperative to come up with projects that involves improvement of lamppost. Stand-alone business offices and even residential communities also contributes to lighting up the community at night with their fence and yard lights.

These lights gives security to the community as it acts as hindrance for lurking culprits who are always waiting for the perfect time to strike.
